Survivor Maths?

Right? Wrong?

Right? Wrong?

I was indulging in some Survivor early this morning, and wanted to talk about the heartfelt sincerity I saw during the rewards bidding challenge where almost everybody pooled their money together for Taj to win the bid of being able to see her husband on the Verizon phone.

However, this caught my eye more instead.

Looking at the equation in the screenshot above, is this mathematically correct without the parentheses?

Given our mathematical education since secondary school, when we see multiplication and division signs, we do them first.

Hence if I were to work it, based on what we have been taught, it should appear as this:

6 + 2 ÷ 4 X 3 ÷ 3 – 7 + 6 + 5 ÷ 31 X 1
= 6 + 0.5 X 3 ÷ 3 – 7 + 6 + (5/3) – 1
= 6 + 1.5 ÷ 3 – 7 + 6 + (5/3) – 1
= 6 + 0.5 – 7 + 6 + (5/3) – 1
= 6 1/6
1

So, which answer is correct?

In pri school, there’s this rule called BODMAS as well.

But then, don’t expect too much from an American reality show eh? :P

  2. na says:

But still, with the rule of BODMAS, multiplication and division still come before addition and subtraction!

  3. hui ru says:

na you’re correct. BODMAS is what we learnt, in any case.
